SOVETSK (TILSIT) – NEMAN (RAGNIT) –
CHERNIAKHOVSK (INSTERBURG)
(8 hours)
This tour starts with a drive to the North-East, visiting first the ruins of the 15th century church in Gross Legitten. It was not damaged during the War, but was immediately abandoned and is now in poor condition. The drive to Labiau is through several villages whose German past is clearly visible in their architecture. Labiau itself has been largely rebuilt but the ruins of the 13th century Teutonic castle remain, as do several large 19th century town houses.

Sovetsk (Tilsit), the next town to be visited.. The symbolic landmark of the town today is the Queen Luise Bridge over Neman River. The bridge is named after the wife of Friedrich Wilhelm III, who made unsuccessful appeal to Napoleon, at Tilsit for clemency of Prussia.
Cherniakhovsk (Insterburg), founded in the 14th century as a Teutonic fort, was the third city of East Prussia and now is equally important in the Kaliningrad region. Buildings from each of the last eight centuries testify to its long history and through generous support from Germany we hope that many will be restored. You should also visit the Majovka (Georgenburg) horse stud in 5 km from the town center where a horse riding school has been set. Every summer The Volvo Cup horse competition takes place in Chernyakhovsk.
Neman (Ragnit) is still dominated by its Teutonic Castle which now lies in ruins.
